Tipperary NY v Waterford NY (SHC)

NY Senior Hurling Championship – R1

Date: 23rd 2.30pm

Report – Some games can be described as a “One Sided Affair”, well TippNY and Waterford NY was just that on Sunday last in Gaelic Park. In attendance was a considerable crowd for a 1st Rd Hurling Game in NY but over the past year or so Hurling has been gaining some momentum, rewind a year ago when the final of 2018 went to extra time between TippNY and Hoboken Guards – would we be in store for more of the same this weekend?

Unfortunately not! The game started well with plenty of open play, referee Micky Quigg keeping the whistle away from his lips allowing both side an opportunity to play the ball and letting the play continue. Tipp were clearly the stronger of the two teams with exciting play coming from both ends of the field. A strong defensive showing, led by ex Waterford Hurler Martin O’Neill gave the Tipp forwards great time and space on the ball with well delivered, fastball into the inside line. Tipps target man was in no doubt, 6f something Bob O’Brien was in flying form and for most of the game had the beating of the Waterford defense and his marker Emmet Hunter. Despite the Tipp boys well in control, Waterford too had some standout performances with Johnny Bermingham at center back and Niall Mitchel center forward, showing their class in the opening half. Waterford struggles came mainly from their own puck-outs, target man Mitchell was been well marshaled by Calum Lyons – the deise man only through customs at JFK a matter of hours. The breakdown of the Waterford puck outs gave the Tipp boys opportunity after opportunity to send the ball back into the danger zone and the Tipp forward line took made use of them all. Tipp led at the half by 15 points to 3.

The second half was a non-contest due to Tipps fast start hitting the net 3 times inside the first 5/10 minutes of the restart, O’Brien, Liam Donovan and John O’Neill all netting to send the Tipp boys out of sight. Both teams have players to add to boost their compliment and hopefully we will be in for some better exchanges in the 2nd fixture.

The game finished Tipperary NY 3.25 – Waterford 0-10
